It was only a short drive to Gettysburg from Lancaster . We had two days planned in to visit the museum and do a a days visit to the battlefield using the service of a professional accredited guide .

We stayed at a historic building The Lightner Farmhouse which was used as a hospital for the Union 1st Corps at the time of the battle and for several weeks after.

We started with a visit to the museum and the cyclorama. Very well done it was too.

The cyclorama is a 360 degree painting of the battle with a light and sound show . I have been to the Waterloo equivalent, though this was definitely better .

The museum helped to set the scene . It didn’t shy away from slavery being a prime cause either. It had a great selection of weapons and uniforms and walked you forward to the battle of Gettysburg , often referred to as the high water mark of the Confederacy.
