USA ‘23 Manassas and Harpers Ferry

We continued to work our way around the west of Washington crossing the Potomac at Shepherdstown and taking us into Virginia

Crossing the Potomac river at Shepherdstown .

We worked our way down to Harpers Ferry . The town was the scene of the John Brown raid on the federal armoury there in 1859 to arm slaves. This was a precursor that fed in the civil war . it’s also known for its association with Lewis and Clark who were to explore in the interior of early Americas . Harpers Ferry is preserved as an historic town with various museums in the buildings – somewhat akin to Beamish in the UK .

It was a short trip to Manasses to have look around the battlefield for the 1861 , and 1862 battles at the site

“Stonewall Jackson” named for the stand of his brigade at 1st Manasses

We only managed to visit a few key parts due to time and the extreme heat and humidity
